Where is the Static Showdown being held?

Everywhere! The Static Showdown is a virtual worldwide hackathon; teams of up to four people can compete from anywhere with an internet connection. You can build your app while wearing your Ninja Turtles footie pajamas; we won't judge.

What qualifies as a "static web application"?

Anything that you can run on a static web server (just files, folks) without writing custom back-end code. Note that you are allowed to use back-end services like Firebase, Parse, or PouchDB. Basically anything that you can drop in as a JavaScript file is fair game.

How will the competition work?

If you're familiar with the Rails Rumble or Node Knockout, like those! If you're not, teams will register before the competition and will have 48 hours to write their apps from scratch. While you can pre-plan what you're going to do, you can't create any digital assets (not even logos or other graphics) before the clock starts. After 48 hours a panel of judges will evaluate the apps and prizes will be awarded in various (yet to be announced) categories.

Who's running this thing and why?

The Static Showdown is being put together by Divshot. We build tools for front-end development and were born at a hackathon, so it seemed only natural to throw a front-end hackathon. Beyond that, we believe that rich front-end apps are the future of web development and competition breeds innovation. More than anything, we're excited to see what our competitors put together!

How do I participate?

The best way to be involved right now is to enter your email address above. We'll send out an email when we're ready to start accepting team and judge registrations. If you're interested, just block out January 24 and 25 on your calendar!
